on the menu tonight:
Trouble Andrew
Emilie Simon
Rye Rye
Estelle
Anthony Hamilton
I wanted to play some contemporary pop music today, because I do like it sometimes. It was completely unintentional how international the playlist was.

Assouf!
on the menu tonight:
Jace Everette (only cuz it's the true blood season finale, although it classifies as blues)
Africando
Ify Krussade Jerry
Kali
José Mangual Jr.
Tinariwen
Tinariwen - Lulla
So I need to start this with a side story. I was using Audacity today to make this podcast and I decided to go through the genre list (I always try to do that for each one even though I'm hella random) and I came across "negerpunk". Now me being me I instantly thought, they can't mean what I think they mean (niggerpunk) so I google that ish. AW HELLA NAW angry Venus comes out when she reads on Wiki (and elsewhere)
"Negerpunk is German, Dutch and Scandinavian for "negro punk", a derogatory term which is not a known genre and appears to have been added as a joke by the developers." (Wiki) Fuck you punk rock came from rock which came from blues which came from Black people. Get over it.
Seriously I need to find a new program.
Any suggestions for podcasting? email me at bayareavenus@gmail.com
Moving on, I find it semi ironic that I found that today when I'm hosting African Diaspora music.
stay green.
stay ALERT.
happy sunday!

I'm Talkin About You - Chuck Berry
I first heard this song from The Rolling Stones (EXCELLENT cover btw, sorry Mos Def) and I loved this song. But I DO have to give Mr. Berry his credit. It's a classic.

The KKK Took My Baby Away
From the greatest punk band in history, an ode to his Black girlfriend.
Which side bar, I'm surprised Black people didn't make this song.

Humbug
Maybe I'm just privately in love with Alex Turner. I don't know how or when this happened, but somewhere along the lines his voice captured me, his poignancy speaks to me in ways most people can't even dream of. I don't know what I'd do if I met him in real life, but I haven't crossed that bridge yet. All I have is three albums, a trio of EP's and a couple live rips I got off the internet to fill in my imagination. I was waiting for Humbug, not at all patiently. I needed to hear what these boys were going to do next, what they would sound like, where they would take me. I fucking LOVE the Arctic Monkeys and there's clearly no turning back even if I wanted to.
This third installment lived up to my own personal hype machine. Opening with My Propeller, a dark brooding song about Alex's, umm.... propeller. Thanks for that one. Really. The best song on the album is by far Fire and the Thud, it's just perfect. It's an intoxicating little poem about trepidation in love, Jaime Cook wails away on the set, and what do you know Alison Mosshart does background vocals on this song. Much of this album was recorded here in The States and I think I can decipher which were recorded in the Mojave at Rancho De La Luna and which were recorded in various parts of NYC. This album is a fine example of what some time in the desert can do to you. It's sexy, it's private, it's longing and its direct. You can't ignore it once you put it on. Cornerstone has to be one of the most absurd situations that I totally understand "Can I call you her name?" hell no, but I've been there, and so have you. And that's what makes Arctic Monkeys genius. They tell your stories, with no qualms about things like censorship being that their popularity grew on the internet and not the radio, they speak whats on your mind and it's always the right time.
Go get this album.

Hold on Punk
So I'm currently on hold with GoDaddy.com trying to get information on one of my websites, and they're elevator music is anything but. I went from Ella Fitgerald to classic punk. Who does that?
They do!
Not that I enjoy being on hold for ages, but at least that made it interesting.
